Unemployment drops in Sandusky County after early 2020 COVID surge
FREMONT - During the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic, forced public health shutdowns by the state closed several Sandusky County businesses for weeks and drove the county s unemployment rate through the roof.
April 2020 saw the county s unemployment rate hit 19.9%, followed by double-digit unemployment numbers in May and June.
Melanie Allen, Sandusky County Department of Job and Family Services director, said those numbers gradually have fallen in the last several months, as the state has lifted COVID-related restrictions and some shuttered small businesses started to reopen their doors. It’s been steadily declining since that time and trending towards more normal unemployment numbers that we’re used to seeing, Allen told the News-Messenger in an email Tuesday.
