I say this every year, but it doesn’t make it any less true: I’ve left a lot on the table this year. So many people stepped up and did incredible things in 2020. There were thousands of people who achieved amazing things, faced the pandemic battle on the front lines, gave back, received awards and impacted lives. I try to do 100 new names every year and not repeat any from previous lists. That said, I’ve still got dozens of names to carry forward to next year. Please stay safe and look after yourself. All the best, always.
A COVID-19 suspected patient is brought into a resuscitation bay in the adult emergency department at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2020. The amount of personal sacrifice for literally putting their own lives at risk to help others is immeasurable, says Burpee. (Mikaela MacKenzie / Winnipeg Free Press files)

Opinion
After reading “A Stain on our Game” by Jeff Hamilton, I felt that I needed and wanted to share my views on the six-part article. I feel strongly that this story has critical teachings in it from which we all can learn.

What really hit close to home for me, again, was Jay Macaulay. I saw myself and so many others who have suffered significant trauma in their lives in Jay. I was there, and I was there for a long time, and it’s brutal. The important part, which I know now, is that there is a way out, and the opportunity to get your power and your life back.
The life and destructive legacy of Graham James
To ensure Graham James would survive his stay in prison, the disgraced junior hockey coach would sometimes be required to move from one facility to the next.
Serial sexual abusers are never popular behind prison walls. But because of the high public profile of some of his victims, including NHLers Theoren Fleury and Sheldon Kennedy, there were many on the inside who were motivated to deliver vigilante justice.
About this series
Graham James was last seen in a courtroom in the summer of 2015.
Appearing via video link from a Quebec prison, the disgraced junior hockey coach pleaded guilty in a Swift Current courtroom to sexual assault on one of his players during the early 1990s, and was sentenced to two additional years behind bars.
HOLDING PATTERN
Do I hold the record wait for unpaid Qantas refunds? I cancelled my return flight from Dallas in late April. When I phoned Qantas in July I was assured that I would get my refund by mid-September. Nothing. In early November I was promised I would get an email the next day and a refund within two weeks. It s now seven months and I m still waiting. Can anyone beat that?

DO THE LIGHT THING
Don t give up on hunting down the northern lights, Rhoda Silber (Traveller Letters November 28). My son and I travelled to Norway at the end of January this year and saw the lights not once, but three times. It was an unusually mild winter in Norway so our nightly sojourns into the mountains around Tromso were bearable. One has to be patient but it was well worth the wait. Despite being a woeful photographer, my photos were spectacular.
