Fall River parents to discuss pandemic, racism with superintendent

FALL RIVER   After a year of increased educational challenges because of the pandemic and widespread upheaval over racial inequities, parents, students and educators will have a chance to meet with school superintendent Matt Malone to discuss how the district can address learning gaps and racial issues. “We had the idea of the forum so that we could have a discussion in the public, in the community, to talk to the superintendent and share our concerns and hear his ideas,” said Sandra Carreiro, an organizer with social justice group United Interfaith Action. Carreiro’s organization is hosting two online community forums with Malone over Zoom in the next few weeks. Parents and families of Fall River Public School students, students themselves, and local educators are encouraged to attend to ask Malone questions and lay out their concerns.

Fall River Buddhist temple a COVID vaccine site for Cambodian community

The same held true for the sole female nun who also resides at the Khmer Buddhist Temple on Highland Avenue. “I’m happy,” said Lompha Riph, a petite woman who shaves her head in a manner consistent with Buddhist tradition. A total of 68 people, most of them members of Fall River’s Cambodian community, came through the doors of the three-story dwelling to get a first-round shot of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Members of the city’s emergency medical services, a division of Fall River’s fire department, were on hand to administer the vaccines.

Why some Fall River police officers are learning Spanish

Why some Fall River police officers are learning Spanish FALL RIVER Starting this week, a handful of Fall River police officers will take Spanish lessons in an effort to better to connect with the city’s growing Hispanic population. “Sometimes small things can become big because there’s a lack in how they can communicate with each other,” said Felix Gonzalez, an organizer with United Interfaith Alliance of Southeastern MA. Sixteen officers from the department, including eight who work in Fall River schools as School Resource Officers, will take three hours of classes per week over Zoom for the next 10 weeks.
