Under the sea: Calling all those who are still not over their
Little Mermaid obsession (Meghan Markle, I’m looking at you). GW professor and folklorist Philippa Rappoport will explain the Slavic folkloric tradition celebrating Mermaid Week. Learn all about Russian water spirits this Profs and Pints online talk, “Mermaid Tales.” Friday 5/7 at 7 PM; $12, buy tickets here.
Get creative: Take a three-hour studio arts class to learn “Gyotaku: The Japanese Art of Printing with Fish” from Smithsonian Associates. You’ll use ink to make a special print with schools of colorful fish (here’s the supply kit). Saturday 5/8 at 10 AM; $75-$85, buy tickets here.

Sandlot Southeast, a huge outdoor culture and entertainment space and food/drink garden showcasing Black-owned businesses, will open a second DC location in Georgetown on May 6. Sandlot Georgetown takes over the site of a demolished gas station, and will offer 240 outdoor seats, weekly live entertainment recently permitted by DC’s revised Covid regulations and a rotating cast of food and drink vendors.

today, April 22: Mendelsohn’s PLNT Burger is popping up at Sandlot Georgetown (
2715 Pennsylvania Ave., NW), which is set to open in May. From noon until 8 PM, there will be plant-based snacks from the burger shop, Soultarian Food Truck, and Soupergirl.
