so far the national guard has dropped some 15 million pounds of sand on these islands so he can field and pelican islands. the idea is to fill in the gaps that exist in these barrier islands and, therefore, prevent the oil getting past the islands and into the environmentally fragile wet lands. some scientists believe that this sort of operation can, in itself do some environmental damage. but governor bobby jindal tells me he believes the positives of this far outweigh the negatives. he says it is far easier to fight the oil here on these barrier island beaches than it is to fight it once it gets in to louisiana s wet lands. now those sand drops, shepard, just one front in what governor jindal has called a war to save louisiana. they will not do the job alone, but officials here promise to do whatever is necessary and they promise too, shep, to make bp
