referendum on illegal immigration and sanctuary city policies. but in san francisco, it was a local murder case with mostly substantial evidence. the fact that a defendant, jose garcia zarate was a multiple felon and deportee and protected by san francisco s decision to refuse to comply with immigration officials, none of that was presented as evidence and the jury was not allowed to consider any of that and not to consider any politics as well when they went in to deliberate. they had deliberated about 30 hours when late this afternoon we got the word that they had reached a verdict and decided that kate steinle s death was in fact a tragic accident. now we re hearing from kate steinle s family. jim steinle saying they re saddened and shocked. kate s brother brad said i m not surprised. the system failed kate from the start of the chain of events. why would the verdict be

now walking free. kate steinle killed in july of 2015, walking arm and arm with her father on a pier in san francisco. shot and killed by an illegal immigrant, jose garcia zarate. he had seven prior felony convictions, four involving narcotics. he was facing six deportation at the time he shot and killed this innocent woman. they said he accidentally killed her. said it was an accident that the bullet ricochetted off the concrete and hit kate steinle. his lawyers said he found the gun moments before he shot her. it gets worse. he says his client had never fired a gun before and got scared after it went off. what did he do? he threw it off the pier. they found it the next day. as i said at if top of the show, sanctuary cities tonight, those that support them, they are to blame for the death of kate
this debate over sanctuary city laws has heated up all over the country. where does it stand today? that s a good question. there are several different ways of looking at this. one is in the court system. one on capitol hill and one is within the white house where there are disputes. so all over the place. in the court system you have somewhere between 140 and 300 sanctuary cities and you ve had the department of justice say to them in effect we ll withhold law enforcement funding if you don t work with us on deporting illegal criminal aliens. on the white house side of things you ve got some of the white house where donald trump during the campaign. a hard liner on immigration and he made it a central part of his case on immigration. and you ve got others in the white house who don t have that same view. it is hard to tell where the president is. you have those same differences on capitol hill among republicans. sandra: as you mentioned it was a major political issue for
