when to be honest with you, the republicans are very responsive to the demands of their base and their base right now is polling more favorably towards putin than our president. the ex president is leading, you know, a sort of band of his followers toward putin as this media, this right wing media. they re leading people into the arms of putin so i wonder if you think that you, can they with stand that and stand by our allies? thanks for having me. the answer to that question i sure hope so. i hope my republican colleagues will work together with democrats to make sure that we put together the mother of all sanctions packages. i believe we have the appetite to do that. i really do think across the
hopefully a negotiated settlement. would be fair to say that we are seeing this gap in global governance oran seeing this gap in global governance or an attempt to look at america and see sanctions packages and because of the concern of criticism of ukraine being abandoned their promising military assistance as well but, frankly, is that enough, given what the ukrainian people are facing at this point in time? i think the largest constraint is provided equipment as feasible as possible. how to get into the city? we have to think about a broader set of measures and i think the great restraint is, of course, crossing the line and having the active engagement of nato troops versus russian troops and that is actually
jets, but only about 27 of those jets were operable. to close the airspace over ukraine, you would need hundreds of jets that could withstand the force of an s-400 that russia has laid on the lands of belarus. so, anything within 200 miles can hit aircraft. so, you need f-35s, f-22s, but hundreds of them. and putin would see that as a clear escalation of war by nato, by the united states. and world war iii is not what people want. and one of the other things that president zelenskyy asked for today were greater, broader sanctions packages. and we need to do that. we need to choke putin. we need to choke the economy he has so he can t continue to invade ukraine. the aid we voted on last week, the aid that president biden is sending today, continuing to give them defense equipment, including the s-300s, they can have an air defense system against what russia is doing, these are all steps in the right
madness and saying, hey, i got no option but but also i think there was a bit of a disbelief . that s why these sanctions packages were not put in place to deter and to prevent russia from going from going to war . but could they have played a role? i think so. i think a good sanctions package a month or two months before the invasion when russia was actually building up multiple infantry mechanized and armored divisions in ukraine and belarus in the north, russia in the east also mobilizing its troops in the southern command from crimea, bringing up north. the u.s. could have possibly brought sanctions. the question is this that you can t really tell a country what to do on their own soil because you can t really tell the world that we know for sure unless you want to show classified information that they are going to invade. so we have to wait for them to make a mistake to commit a crime and then punish them for it. so it s tricky. sometimes they can deter, sometimes they can punish
