BLM invites public comment on SPRNCA draft Land Health Evaluations and scoping on the associated grazing lease renewals
30-day comment period begins May 18
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Tucson Field Office has released draft Land Health Evaluations (LHEs) and has initiated public scoping on the associated lease renewal Environmental Assessment (EA) for the four grazing allotments located partially in the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area. The May 18 release began a 30-day comment period.
The completion of the LHEs and associated EA will be the BLM’s initial step in managing the four grazing allotments through an adaptive management process as approved in the July 2019 SPRNCA Resource Management Plan (RMP). The Arizona Legislature has taken up a range of water-related measures this year, but some bills that would strengthen the state’s water rules to protect declining groundwater and desert streams have run into opposition and have failed to move forward.
Republican and Democratic legislators introduced several bills that would establish some groundwater rules in unregulated rural areas where there are no limits on pumping and where water levels are dropping.
Those bills, which were opposed by the agriculture industry and key Republican leaders in the Legislature, haven’t been heard. Similar measures died in the Legislature last year.

BLM plans safety and access improvements at San Pedro House
Work scheduled to begin Jan. 11
SIERRA VISTA, Ariz. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Tucson Field Office will construct a permanent fence near the San Pedro House located in the BLM-administered San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area near Sierra Vista along Highway 90. The work will occur where a temporary fence was previously installed to protect the visiting public from falling branch hazards from a large Cottonwood tree. Some of the trails in the nearby Demonstration Garden will be surfaced with crushed stone to improve accessibility. The work is planned from Jan. 11–Feb. 11.
