Community members are stopping by the San Luis Obispo Police Department to pay their respects for Detective Luca Benedetti.
Det. Benedetti died Monday when a commercial buglrary suspect shot at officers who were serving a search warrant at an apartment on Camellia Court.
Flowers, balloons, flags and other mementos surround the police station on Walnut St. When I saw on the news that he had passed away, my heart hurt. It ached. I was with a couple of friends and we decided he deserves for us to pay our respects, San Luis Obispo County resident Chloe Medlock said.

May 10 Update 7:10 p.m.:
Two officers were shot while serving a search warrant Monday afternoon at an apartment in the area of South Higuera Street and Margarita Avenue, according to a Police Department news release.
The suspect is dead, and there is no threat to the public at this time, according to the release.
The department gave no details about the condition of the officers.
It is asking people to avoid the area while an investigation is being conducted.
Additional information is expected to be released on the city s website when it becomes available.

San Luis Obispo Police have released the names of the officers involved in an active shooting incident on Monday, May 10.
Detective Luca Benedetti was shot and killed Monday while serving a search warrant to an apartment on Camellia Court in San Luis Obispo.
“Yesterday I had to share the most difficult news I’ve ever had to deliver,” said Derek Johnson, San Luis Obispo City Manager at a press conference. “That our community lost one of the dedicated servants while doing his job and keeping the community safe.”
Another officer, Detective Steve Orozco, was injured during the incident and was transported to Sierra Vista Hospital where he was released Monday evening.
