Avalanches Leave 10 People Dead in One Week

Ten people are dead after avalanches in five different states over the course of a week, highlighting the danger that comes during the peak of avalanche season and winter weather.
The latest incident happened Thursday in Colorado, where a backcountry skier was caught up in a slide near Vail.
Avalanches also killed a skier Wednesday in California, three hikers Tuesday in Alaska, one skier Tuesday in New Hampshire, three Monday in Colorado and one Jan. 29 in Utah.
Ethan Greene, director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, said such incidents aren t out of the ordinary for this time of year but recent days have been especially lethal.
After days of search and rescue efforts, officials have determined that three men from Eagle County were killed in Monday’s avalanche between Silverton and Ophir.

The bodies of three backcountry skiers buried in a large avalanche in southwestern Colorado were found Wednesday under more than 20 feet (6 meters) of debris, and a slide near Vail Mountain Resort on Thursday killed another skier, officials said.
The bodies of the skiers in southwestern Colorado, which were located with the help of their avalanche beacons, had to be left at the site between the towns of Silverton and Ophir because bad weather prevented a helicopter from retrieving them from the rugged terrain, the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management said.

The bodies of the three skiers caught in a large avalanche in Colorado on Monday have been recovered, according to the San Juan County Office of Emergency Management.
“The skiers were wearing beacons which enabled a successful identifiable location,” according to SJCOEM.
The victims were discovered Wednesday in more than 20 feet of avalanche debris and their bodies will have to be removed at a later time due to inclement weather, it said. Due to the terrain, a retrieval via helicopter is required.
The three were earlier Wednesday identified in a joint statement from Eagle County and the Town of Eagle, Colorado.

Updated 3:50 AM ET, Thu February 4, 2021 (CNN)The body of a skier was recovered Wednesday after an avalanche in the New Hampshire Ammonoosuc Ravine in the White Mountain National Forest, according to the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department.
It was the third time in less than a week where a back-country skier has died in an avalanche in the US.
The skier, whose identity has yet to be disclosed, was reported missing Tuesday evening after he didn t return home.
Rescue teams found his body around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, according to a press statement.
