Editor’s note: The Journal continues “What’s in a Name?,” a twice a month column in which staff writer Elaine Briseño will give a short history of how places in New Mexico got their names. A stroll through Old Town feels like a time-traveling walk back into the late 19th century. Old Town was the birthplace of Albuquerque, founded in 1706 by Francisco Cuervo y Valdés. It received its designation as “old” in the late 1800s when what is now Downtown Albuquerque sprung up and became “New Town.” ...................... The shops are old converted homes, many of which could still be mistaken for a private, late 1800s and early 1900s residence.
