The Journal continues “What’s in a Name?,” a twice a month column in which staff writer Elaine Briseño will give a short history of how places in New Mexico got their names.
A stroll through Old Town feels like a time-traveling walk back into the late 19th century.
Old Town was the birthplace of Albuquerque, founded in 1706 by Francisco Cuervo y Valdés. It received its designation as “old” in the late 1800s when what is now Downtown Albuquerque sprung up and became “New Town.”
