CITYVIEW s Best of Des Moines

By Jeff Pitts 2/3/2021 You know the drill by now. For nearly three decades, CITYVIEW’s Best Of Des Moines Poll has informed central Iowa about its biggest, best, brightest, tastiest, most fabulous, most effective, most fun, most entertaining, most interesting, its fittest and… You get the idea. Being the best at something doesn’t just happen. Rising to the top of the heap is hard work, but once it’s done, you might as well cash in. Being recognized as the Best Of Des Moines has changed many businesses and propelled them to places they previously wouldn’t have thought possible. CITYVIEW expects that trend to continue.

Sushi restaurant planned for east side

Located at 97 Chapel Ave., the property sits on the same side of the street and next door to Rosepepper Cantina and is located in a commercial node some refer to as Walden. It is sandwiched by Eastwood and Lockeland Springs. The new owner is Yun Choo, who owns Samurai Sushi on Elliston Place in Midtown. He could not be reached for comment, but a source who asked to go unnamed confirmed the transaction and that Choo plans a business that will take décor and menu cues from Las Vegas sushi restaurants. According to a Davidson County Register of Deeds document, the sellers were Yvette Thomas and Guillermo “Willy” Thomas, who paid $390,000 for the property in mid-2006, according to Metro records. The Thomases also owned and operated Eastland Café, which closed Jan. 23 after a roughly 14-year run. Previously, Chapel Bistro operated from the space, having opened in the early 2000s.

New restaurant coming to The Falls at Westmall

THE food business continues to be a revolving door during the Covid-19 pandemic as while some restaurants are lowering their flames others are beginning to heat up. One of the restaurants taking that leap of faith and opening up its doors at The Falls at Westmall this week, is “Luna”. It will be situated in the same spot where Moon Over Bourbon Street, affectionately called MOBS, which was a popular bar and restaurant in 1990s, was once located. Who is owner of Luna? His name is Joe Pires, the owner of Island Beer Chill and Grill and Samurai Sushi at One Woodbrook Place, Damian Street, Port of Spain.
