Divers search for man missing in Canyon Lake

Almost two weeks after the body of Canyon Lake’s third drowning victim this season was recovered, first responders returned to look for a 26-year-old man who went missing early Sunday evening. Canyon Lake Fire and EMS Chief Darren Brinkkoeter said units from his department, Comal County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens were called to a cove just east of Boat Ramp 7, around 5 p.m. “It’s a unified search,” Brinkkoeter said around 8:30 p.m. Sunday. “Right now we’re looking for a 26-year-old male, with black shorts in the cove near Boat Ramp 7. Crews are looking for him.”

Divers locate Canyon Lake drowning victim

On the fourth day of searching, divers Tuesday afternoon recovered the body of Joel Jijo, 22, of Houston, who disappeared while swimming on Canyon Lake on Saturday morning. Samuel Padgett, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game warden, said Jijo, who wasn’t wearing a lifejacket when last seen between Boat Ramps No. 5 and No. 6 on Saturday, was recovered by Houston Police Department divers in about 34 feet of water around 5 p.m. “From the beginning of the search there wasn’t a moment where there wasn’t at least one boat looking in the search area,” Padgett said of the four-day recovery effort by boats and divers from the TPWD, Canyon Lake Fire and EMS and the New Braunfels Fire Department.

Water levels close four Canyon Lake boat ramps

Boaters beware before thinking about dropping anchor at a barricaded boat ramp on Canyon Lake. At least four public ramps have been closed – not because drought has led to drops in water levels throughout the entire lake but only in sections, and all four are in the Canyon Lake Hills area. “Currently (county) ramps Nos. 5, 7, 22, and 23 are closed due to the lake levels,” Comal County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Mike Smith said. “Driving around barricades is covered under Section 472.022 of the Texas Transportation Code and carries a fine up to $200 when not related to barricades placed due to water over the roads such as in flash flood occurrences.”
