Convention of Colored Citizens of New Jersey: The first Convention of Colored Citizens of New Jersey was held in Trenton on Aug. 22, 1849. Sixteen local Black leaders throughout the state assembled to protest slavery, the disenfranchisement of Blacks, and the overall conditions of Black citizens. The roots to the convention date back to the founding of the Anti-Slavery Leaders of Newark in 1835.
