ADVERTISEMENT The police in Ogun State, on Wednesday, paraded 25 suspected members of the dreaded Buccaneer cult group, who they arrested during an alleged initiation ceremony in Abeokuta. Parading the suspects at the Command’s Headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, the state Commissioner of Police, Edward Ajogun, said the suspects were arrested along with three herbalists, who conducted the initiation. The commissioner said the cultists were arrested, following intelligence reports, that some cultists were planning to unleash mayhem on members of the public, after conducting an initiation rite for new members in Ita-Oshin area of Abeokuta.

Man, 23, beaten to death over phone theft

The complainant told the police that his son, Samuel Ajibade, accused of stealing two handsets, was beaten into unconsciousness by the suspects. He further reported that the victim was rushed to General Hospital, Ota for medical attention, but was confirmed dead on arrival. The spokesman of the State Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, told newsmen on Sunday that following the report, the DPO Onipanu Division, Bamidele Job, led detectives to the scene where the three suspects were arrested. Oyeyemi said the corpse of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue of General Hospital, Ota for post mortem. He said the suspects would be transferred to the homicide section of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

The suspects narrowly escaped being lynched by an irate mob following their arrest by police. The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday. Oyeyemi said the suspects, Ugo Obi, Chinonso Jude and Chibuke Samson, were residents of MTN Street, Iju-Ota in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of the state. The PPRO said the police got the report of the incident from the father of the deceased, Gbenga Ajibade.
