Detroit activists celebrate guilty verdict in George Floyd slaying but say their work is far from over

DETROIT, MI Kenya Fentress cried as she waited to hear whether a jury’s decision would provide justice in the murder of George Floyd.
Fentress, a Detroit Black woman who has experienced police injustice in her hometown, described the moment as overwhelming. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of second- and third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter just under a year after he was recorded on video pinning Floyd to the ground until he died.
Fentress said she believes Chauvin wouldn’t have been charged if the country wasn’t able to watch Floyd die over the nine minutes and 29 seconds caught on camera. The video was damning, she said, but police brutality against Black people still continued in the year since Floyd’s death.

Detroit community leaders and Michigan criminal justice experts hailed the Tuesday guilty verdicts against former Minneapolis police officer DerekA Chauvin in the death of George Floyd, but some said it didn t lessen the urgent need for police reform in the United States.
A jury deliberated less than day and found Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter. It followed the playing in court of a 9-minute video showing Chauvin kneeling on Floyd s neck last May. Justice won, the Rev. Charles Williams II said Tuesday.
“But we must ask ourselves the question. How long must we continue to watch these cases of police brutality on our social media feeds?, he asked.
