Our cover story features University of New Orleans student Samira Bechara, a dual French and international studies major, who created a culinary outreach project called Le Beirut to raise money for the victims of the Aug. 4, 2020 explosion in Beirut, Lebanon. Bechara’s father was born in Beirut and she spent summers visiting relatives there.
Speaking of outreach, you also can read about alumnus Henry Singer, a retired engineer, who has created a scholarship for UNO students looking to major in engineering or the sciences. Singer, who worked his way through UNO, says he understands some of the financial challenges students face.
University of New Orleans student Samira Bechara grew up near Seattle, Washington but spent many summers visiting extended family in Beirut, Lebanon.
When an explosion ripped through the city of Beirut on Aug. 4, 2020, killing more than 200 people and destroying thousands of homes and buildings, Bechara was devastated.
The coronavirus pandemic had caused the cancelation of Bechara’s summer plans to study French at the American University in Beirut; otherwise she would have been there.
“I was already feeling very nostalgic and missing Lebanon a lot and then the explosion happened,” Bechara said. “I kind of had a meltdown and felt like I just needed to help in some way.”
