Lapid’s meeting with the Joint List leaders came hours ahead of a primetime address by their ex-colleague-turned-potential kingmaker, Mansour Abbas of the Ra’am party. In a statement, Yesh Atid said Lapid met with Odeh and Tibi, and the three “discussed ways to form a new government that will prevent [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, [far-right Religious Zionism’s Itamar] Ben Gvir and [Bezalel] Smotrich forming a government.”

(Hadas Parush/Flash90) Joint List Knesset member Sami Abou Shahadeh won the leadership of the Arab nationalist Balad faction Saturday night, beating out incumbent Mtanes Shihadeh, who has led the party in the last three elections. Abou Shahadeh won 230-159 in a vote by the faction’s central committee. According to internal party rules, Shihadeh is now ineligible to be on the party’s slate in the March election. Abou Shahadeh entered the Knesset in October 2019 as part of the Joint List alliance of four majority-Arab parties. A resident of Tel Aviv-Jaffa, he previously served on the city’s municipal council as a Balad representative, even joining mayor Ron Huldai’s ruling coalition.

In an online special committee meeting, Sami Abou Shahadeh, a member of a coalition of Arab parties known as the Joint List, spoke in Arabic directly to the UAE officials on Tuesday, criticizing Abu Dhabi’s diplomatic normalization with Tel Aviv launched earlier this year. The session was attended by Jamal al-Jarwan, the secretary-general of the UAE International Investors Council for Investors Abroad, and Juma al-Kait, a trade official under the UAE Ministry of Economy.
