Local organization collecting donations to support Idaho farmworkers amid extreme heat

IDAHO â Extreme heat throughout the region is raising concerns among local farmworker advocates, including the Idaho Immigrant Resource Alliance (IIRA).
IIRA is now collecting donations and raising funds for heat and smoke relief efforts to directly benefit the area s farmworkers.
âWe want to make sure they are staying cool, hydrated, and possibly have shade,â said Samantha Guerrero, a bilingual community organizer with the Idaho Organization of Resource Councils (IORC). âWe are currently fundraising to purchase water bottles to get out to them, to purchase coolers and anything else they may need such as protective equipment. They will also have to face the wildfires and breathe in that air, and we are hoping to get N95 masks as well.â

The nation’s food workers, hit hard by Covid-19 infections throughout the crisis, are finding resistance in the race to get vaccinated.
The industry is clamoring to prioritize frontline food workers who kept Americans fed throughout the worst of the pandemic even as thousands of them fell sick and hundreds died. But limited doses and a haphazard patchwork of distribution plans are leading to fears that thousands more workers will get hit potentially stymieing food production in the coming weeks and months.
