Pointe-aux-Chenes parents, residents and students protest proposed school closure
About two dozen parents, residents and students gathered outside Pointe-aux-Chenes Elementary today to protest a proposal that would close the school amid dwindling enrollment.
The Terrebonne Parish School Board is set to decide April 13 whether to close the school and send its students about four miles away to Montegut Elementary.
Mary Verdin said she attended the protest because five of her children have attended Pointe-aux-Chenes Elementary, with one now in third grade.
“We have regular group meetings at the Knights of Columbus Hall to plan for strategies because this proposal completely blindsided us,” Verdin said.
