Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition launches today and PC (and will soon be released on next-generation consoles, too, albeit with a more limited feature set) as the first triple-A game that actually requires a graphics card with hardware support for ray tracing, and we ve got the chance to check it out in the past few days.
Let s begin with a brief technical explanation of what the talented developers at 4A Games actually focused on enhancing.
It s important to note that the developers themselves admit to be still using rasterization methods at certain points of the process, which means there s still a hybrid renderer at play here. To be more specific, they use it to determine the primary rays cast from the camera, as it s still a very efficient way that doesn t meaningfully sacrifice quality. These rasterized positions are then used via the lighting equation to generate direct illumination for a given surface.

Metro Exodus, the acclaimed third instalment in developer 4A Games horror-tinged first-person shooter series, will be making its way to Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 on 18th June.
Exodus once again catapults players into a post-apocalyptic Russia - a predominantly subterranean world of survival inspired by the novels of celebrated author Dmitry Glukhovsky - this time adding open-ended overground sandbox environments to complement the series traditionally linear slaying and scavenging. Eurogamer liked it a lot when it came to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2019, slapping it with a Recommended badge and calling it an atmospheric, characterful voyage across a ruined Russia.

Next-gen enhancements are coming to Metro Exodus in June.
It s a big day for Metro Exodus, as Deep Silver and 4A Games have released the game s Enhanced Edition today, May 6, on PC, and announced details on a free upgrade for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.
The Enhanced Edition is described as a radical update that makes Metro Exodus look better with ray-tracing support for those who strong enough rigs. PC players also get better frame rates and improve resolution.
Deep Silver went on to say that the Enhanced Edition makes every light source fully ray-traced, also noting that the upgrade is so extensive that it requires a ray-tracing capable GPU as its minimum spec. [It] will be delivered as a separate product it is not a simple patch to the base game instead it will be offered as an extra entitlement to all existing Metro Exodus PC players, Deep Silver said.

Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition is out now on PC, but what about those looking to enjoy the visual boost on next-gen consoles? Well, good news! 4A Games has locked down a June release date for the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions! You can check out some next-gen console footage running on Xbox Series X below (jump to around the 2:20 mark).
Both the Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions will run at 4K (it isn’t specified if its upscaled 4K or not) and a “rock solid” 4K, while boasting full ray tracing and other effects.
