Traditionally, this is where governors stand before you and report with practiced grand 0sty that the state of our state is strong and getting stronger. And largely, that is still true and yes, proudly, we still are americas coming attraction. By any standard and by nearly every recognizable metric, the state of california is not just thriving, but in many instances leading the country, inventing the future and inspiring the nation. We remain the fifth largest economy in the world and join 118 consecutive months of net job growth,

When the framers created the position, what were they thinking about . A kind of model of the speakership where it was a position that had some parliamentary responsibilities, so its job was to preside over the chamber and make sure the rules were being followed fairly, but they also understood could take onion other responsibilities. It is telling it is mentioned only once in the constitution and says the house shall choose it speaker and leaves the rest up to the house to determine what the speaker responsibilities will be. Over time, has it evolved as the institution changed or a combination . I think it is a combination. Now, we are finally responding to years of chronic trade abuses by defending our workers with tariffs, and anything else that is necessary. Because nobody is going to steal our businesses, nobody will close our factories, and nobody will close our plants anymore. They are all coming back. [applause] susan President Trump has popularized the debate over tariffs in our country once again. But how long throughout our history have tariffs been a subject of political debate . Peter tariffs have been the topic of discussion from the beginning. Tariffs make great rhetoric. Really power people up. One could argue that the United States was founded on a tariff battle. Not american tariffs, but opposition to english tariffs. Susan we will spend some time we started asking questions about the tariff debate and we thought we would bring the audience along to learn more about the role of tariffs and American History.

A bit of news on this thursday, roger stone, former trump associate was sentenced earlier today to three years in prison for lying to federal prosecutors as part of the russia probe. I wanted to get your take on whether or not that is a fair sentence and whether you agree with some of the statements President Trump has made . Tim i know the president had some issues with it. Obviously, infractions were made, it was a felony. I think it is a problem and i think the sentence makes sense, but i will leave it up to the people in the Legal Community to figure that out.
