Skip forward to 2018, Jennifer and her husband, Sam Bungey, would cover the notorious murder of Sophie Toscan du Plantier in their now widely-acclaimed podcast entitled West Cork.
Jennifer spoke over the phone about her Limerick connections - her English accent reminding this reporter of the haunting narrative in the podcast. “Both my parents are from Limerick. They went to London in their early twenties but we had close ties to Limerick growing up. Both sets of grandparents were there so we came back at least once or twice a year.”

In December 1996, the death of Sophie Toscan du Plantier shook the residents of West Cork. Just two days before Christmas, her body was found near her holiday home in Schull, the circumstances around her death remain unsolved.
In 2018, Sophie s story was brought to public attention again in the podcast West Cork . The 13 episode series revisited the case and became hugely popular both in Ireland and internationally.
A lot has happened in the three years since West Cork concluded and producers Sam Bungey and Jennifer Forde have confirmed that a new episode is on the way.
The murder rocked the quiet, Irish town and 24 years later, the case remains a mystery. The key suspect, English journalist Ian Bailey – the first reporter on the scene – was quickly arrested by local police following eye-witness reports, yet was never found guilty in Ireland, owing to a lack of reliable evidence. Despite this, Bailey was found guilty in absentia by the French courts in 2019 and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Having successfully fought repeated extradition requests from the French authorities, Bailey still resides in West Cork and maintains his innocence to this day.
A recent newfound public fascination occurred following the success of the West Cork podcast by English documentarian Jennifer Forde and investigative journalist Sam Bungey. Bailey maintains his innocence.
