NETTLETON â Results of April 6âs mayorâs race are being contested in Monroe County Circuit Court after an order was filed May 6 by Jackson attorney Sam Begley on behalf of candidate Phillip Baulch.
In the election, Incumbent Mayor Mem Riley had 344 votes, compared to Baulchâs 340 votes, after affidavit ballots were counted and was declared as the winner. Initial election night results indicated Riley received 341 votes to Baulchâs 331 votes.
According to the petition for judicial review document, allegations include at least three affidavit ballots were unlawfully counted.
It also alleges a number of people voting in the election should have been required to vote affidavit because they should have been purged from the voter rolls due to moving out of the city.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - A former Hinds County supervisor’s efforts to overturn the 2019 Democratic primary results on the grounds of residency could lead to a state election law being changed.
Darrel McQuirter is challenging District Two Supervisor David Archie in court, saying Archie shouldn’t have been able to run for supervisor based on residency requirements.
He is currently seeking a rehearing in his case before the Mississippi Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, Sam Begley, an attorney for McQuirter, has notified the state attorney general that he is challenging the constitutionality of a state code governing election appeals.
