HANNIBAL, Mo (WGEM) Pig farmers, 4-H and swine exhibitors are coming together in an effort to battle food insecurity.
According to Feeding America, one in five kids in Missouri struggle with food insecurity. On top of that, protein is one of the hardest items to acquire in food pantries due to rising prices.
Through this program, pig farmers and exhibitors can donate pigs locally or through the Missouri State Fair Foundation to help feed the hungry.
Pigs can be donated locally at USDA or state-inspected lockers, and then the farmers can choose to deliver the pork to the food pantry of choice. In this option, The Missouri Farmers Care Foundation will reimburse costs up to one hundred dollars per pig.
