Thirty-five years since the “People Power” ouster of Marcos in the Philippines 26 February 2021 On February 26, 1986, Ferdinand Marcos and his family, confronting ouster by significant sections of the military and popular opposition from millions of Filipinos who had taken to the streets, were hastily evacuated from Malacañang presidential palace by US military helicopters. They were brought to Hawai’i, where the former dictator, who had exercised brutal rule over the Philippines since 1972, lived out the rest of his life in comfortable exile. The overthrow of Marcos is popularly associated with the nonviolent assembly of millions of ordinary Filipinos on Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (Edsa), who courageously stood their ground in front of Marcos’ tanks, in an event that became known as “People Power.” Reality is more complicated. Thirty-five years ago on February 7,  when the snap elections for Philippine presidential and vice presidential elections were held. On February 9, 1986, thirty-five tabulators manning the COMELEC’s quick count computer terminals walked out during the 1986 snap elections (Photo from Bantayog Museum) The 1986 snap polls saw Corazon Aquino, widow of senator Benigno Ninoy Aquino Jr. running against President Ferdinand Marcos, with former senator Salvador Laurel as her running mate. The Commission on Elections declared Marcos the winner of the said polls but the count of the National Citizens Movement for Free Elections (NAMFREL) showed otherwise. It was a turning point in the country’s history as the Marcos regime soon came to an end.
