FIREFIGHTERS have blasted vandals after dealing with a string of incidents in one night. Fire crews were called out to three incidents in the Barrow area on Thursday night after a ‘sharp increase’ in deliberate fires in the warmer weather. The incidents, which took place on Cavendish Dock, Salthouse Mills and Hindpool Road, are believed to be started by youths. A group of young people were seen running from the area when confronted by members of the public in all three incidents. Tom Wright, watch manager at Cumbria Fire and Rescue, said call outs involving youths were an ‘ongoing problem’ during the warmer weather.
A spokesman for Barrow Firestation said: This is not acceptable. Another deliberate and mindless act down at Cavendish Dock this evening (yesterday) shortly after 7pm, followed by a smaller incident closer to Salthouse Mills, attended by Walney Fire Station. Just before 11pm a further call to a ‘Fire in the Open’ to the rear of Iceland off Hindpool Road. It is believed that youths are behind the incident, with youths seen running from the area when confronted by members of the public in all three incidents. The spokesman said: Vandalism and anti-social behaviour like this takes us away from attending more serious incidents and with reference to the fire at the rear of Iceland, could have resulted in a larger commercial fire if it had not been discovered so quickly.
