The statues had been carved from the cliff in the early 6th and 7th Centuries AD, when Buddhism was the region s dominant religion.
The ancient sandstone carvings were once the world s tallest Buddhas, but they were lost when the Taliban blew them up 20 years ago.

MARLBORO - The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating a fall that happened at a township worksite Monday.
Township police received a 911 call shortly after 11:30 a.m. reporting that a worker, a 24-year-old North Plainfield man, fell through the roof and landed inside a building at 240 Boundary Road.
The roofer fell about 20 feet, injured his head, back and leg, and may have suffered internal injuries, Capt. Stephen Levy of the Marlboro Township Police Department said.

He was conscious when police arrived, he said.
The injured man was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Neither his name nor his condition were released.
