this weekend as well. and salon.com s joan walsh. thank you, both for being here. good being with you, rev. congressman, a lot of your republican colleagues who went to selma with all of us don t want to work on voting rights. how do you explain that? well, look reverend al what i m hoping takes place here and i agree with what senator coons just said is that i was talking to a number of my republican i m glad they came number one. but there was a number of them who were relatively young. so i m hoping that they really had not studied and understood the real meaning of what the voting rights act stood for and why it is intricately important for them to work on it. when i go back to washington d.c., i m going to talk to them and say, look this is an american issue that s not just for black folk but it s for all americans and if we re going to talk around the world about a democracy, then we ve got to make sure that democracy happens right here in the united states.
stop the president from his illicit activities. well, that s the it s a good set of talking points. now all they ve got to do is figure out how to govern. joining me now is salon.com s joan walsh. thank you for being here. thanks rev. thanks for having me. joan if speaker boehner can t get his members to vote for homeland security can he do anything? no, i don t think he can do anything. and i you know i really think that they put that vote on the floor, they thought that they had the vote. they ve done this time and again, rev, where they try a compromise with their members but strangely they come up short. they have to turn to nancy pelosi to get anything done. and so i think that this idea that they are only disagreeing on tactics, no, they ve got to caucus in their caucus a small caucus, that doesn t believe that government should work, that is really comfortable shutting down the department of homeland security which can t help but harm our security and
want to work with them i want to get things done. i don t have another election to run. joining me now, emanuel cleaver, democrat of missouri and joan walsh of salon.com. thank you both for being here. thanks, rev. good to be here rev. congressman, the president wants to get things done this year. any chance your republican colleagues have the same resolution? i don t think so. most of the republicans campaigned around the country against the president. in my neighboring state of kansas, for example, most people probably didn t know who the republican senate candidate was running against, because he said was my opponent looked at a picture of the president, my opponent knows the president s full name and that disqualifies them. so when it comes to the legislation legislation, republicans are going to be kind of like underwear. they know they have to have it
apparatus to get the vote out for you. and what s the proof that hillary clinton is delaying? they looked at it and said, well, she s still giving paid speeches up until, through march. when you run for the president, you have to cancel paid speeches. well, they were broke when they left the white house [laughter] you know, i don t know if you had a chance, there were a lot of blogs out there writing about this, i know salon.com wrote something about the inevitability factor and how that can hurt you as a candidate, but there s one thing that is factual, and if you look back at the polling for hillary clinton, her negatives are still so strong in that disapproval category for voters and different types of polling, you re asked the question, do you like her i ll jump in quickly. when hillary clinton, unfortunately, when she doesn t talk her poll ratings go up, and the inverse happens when she is talking and i ve read that based on memory of when she and her husband were in
