For the cost of two hip replacements, the Canterbury health board has paid an Auckland-based contractor to help it find “significant savings” in its budget. Alma Consulting was paid about $55,000 for up to 110 hours of work – or $500 an hour – to “narrow the focus” and “assist us to ensure we can identify significant savings”, Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB) chief executive Peter Bramley said. He told the board about the consultancy appointment in March after starting in his role in February and said he did not have the luxury of waiting for the new executive team to be in place to work on the plan.
