Letters to the Editor (3/17/21)

Damn Good Journalism Chelsea Edgar is an absolutely amazing writer. Reading her [ Mother Load, March 10], I felt this crazy swirl of things: guilty relief that my pandemic life has been relatively stable; anger about how even in Vermont we haven t figured out how to make life not suck for everyone; a rush of empathy and affection for these three brave, strong, nearly broken women. Her writing made it all the way into my heart. That s a mark of damn good journalism. Thank you. Jason Van Driesche Another Mother Chelsea Edgar s article was outstanding and heartbreaking [ Mother Load, March 10]. All during the months last year, I felt so fortunate to be 59 years old with young motherhood behind me. That s because I knew how awful it would have been to be a young mother dealing with it.

Small Pleasures: Myer s Rosemary-Sea Salt Bagel

Seven Days Rosemary-sea salt bagel with scallion cream cheese I never thought I’d call a New York City bagel-eater deprived, but that’s the conclusion I’ve come to after reading the top bagel picks of the New York Times food editors. Their bagel preferences were posted January 23 on @nytcooking, the newspaper’s food Instagram page. The culinary pros in the bagel capital of the world announced choices like bacon, egg and cheese on toasted cinnamon; whole wheat everything with tofu veggie cream cheese; and egg everything with cream cheese and bacon. WTF?! No one picked a rosemary-sea salt bagel, an outstanding addition to a food landscape that s bereft of nothing. For a bagel traditionalist like me with a half-century preference for poppy and sesame, a variety that knocks them out of  the toaster is front-page news. Not a glossy on the gram.

Dining on a Dime (and a Joint): Prohibition Pig and Zenbarn Farms

Seven Days Eggplant hoagie and chicken wings from Prohibition Pig, with a hemp joint from Zenbarn Farms When I decided late Monday afternoon to drive to Waterbury for a free joint at Zenbarn Farms, I figured I’d make a little road trip out of it. Get the hemp joint, walk the dogs on the Short Trail, and pick up dinner to-go on the cheap ($12 or less) at Prohibition Pig. Checking the restaurant’s online menu from home as the plan took shape, I spotted the Staff Meal ($12), a salad with arugula, farro, grapes, Brussels sprouts and more. “That’s it!” I told my daughter. “That’s what I’m getting.”

The Seven Days Wellness Issue, 2021

Seven Days Last year, the cover of Seven Days annual Wellness Issue, published on January 15, 2020, depicted a young woman in an 802 tank top sitting in a serene, cross-legged lotus position inside a protective bubble. With her were a steaming mug of tea, a vial of CBD and other cozy-healthy accoutrements. Said bubble floated above, wait for it, a flaming dumpster. The image was not meant to be prophetic. We actually thought the world was a dumpster fire at the time. In January. We ll wait for you to stop laughing. The subsequent months were . well, they weren t good, folks. You were there, so we ll spare you the triggering rundown of 2020 s Greatest Hits. Let s just say things devolved, and quickly.

Life Stories: Remembering Vermonters Who Died in 2020

click to enlarge Eddie Toney Eddie Toney s first job was at a shoe factory in Littleton, N.H., just over the border from his hometown of St. Johnsbury. It was well into the Great Depression, and Eddie had quit school after eighth grade to help his family; he d never much enjoyed classroom learning anyway. The teenager made $8.75 weekly, until one week when his pay envelope contained just 42 cents. As Eddie told the story, he returned it to his boss, saying, You can use it more than me and was summarily fired. Other than a stint in the army during World War II, Eddie, who died in September of natural causes just four months shy of his 100th birthday, never worked for anyone else again.
