Electoral College ballots were saved from being burned by the mob , a senator has said, as protesters overran the US Capitol building.
Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democratic senator from Oregon, posted a photo of the ballots on Twitter, saying: If our capable floor staff hadn t grabbed them, they would have been burned by the mob.
Later Mr Merkley added: I am safe, and thank you to all who have reached out in concern. It has been a truly dark day at the US Capitol.
