Modern slavery: What role for multilateralism and global institutions?

Date Friday, 28 May, 2021 - 09:00 to 12:00 This half-day workshop is jointly hosted by ANU College of Law and ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, in partnership with the Walk Free Foundation, the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative and the Commonwealth Round Table (Australia). Register for this event to join our panel of experts as we discuss modern slavery in our region and beyond. This workshop is part of the Modern Slavery event series, which includes the Anthony Low Commonwealth Lecture 2021: How to eliminate human trafficking and modern slavery from our 21st century world. ANU Chancellor and former Foreign Minister of Australia, the Hon Julie Bishop will deliver the annual lecture, named in honour of former ANU Vice-Chancellor and Commonwealth of Nations scholar, the late Professor Anthony Low AO. We decided early on that UH-Maui College would be “all in.” We would communicate regularly, welcome every innovative idea, partner with the public and private sectors, deploy every resource human and otherwise to keep our campus safe, keep our students learning, and do what we could to help our county. We knew it would be a Herculean task. And we knew we could do it because we are fortunate to have a deep bench of faculty, staff, students and community supporters with an awesome range of knowledge and capabilities.

Community Heroes: Sally Irwin and Kathryn Murphy team up for charity

La Jolla Light’s Community Heroes nominations, there was a double heartwarmer this week. La Jolla resident Sally Irwin was nominated for her volunteerism with San Diego Military Outreach Ministries. Though she said she was “honored,” Irwin has a family member in need of care and couldn’t commit to an interview. So she nominated fellow La Jollan Kathryn Murphy, “one of the most generous people I know.” Murphy said that to be nominated was “kind,” but because she doesn’t “feel like I’m currently spending enough time helping the community the way I used to,” she offered another nomination Sally Irwin.
