Plane makes emergency landing near Salisbury airport

A pilot was forced to make an emergency landing Friday morning when their aircraft lost power after taking off from the Salisbury Regional Airport. Maryland State Police received a call at about 11 a.m. from Wicomico County administrators reporting that a private plane had declared an emergency after taking off from the airport, according to a news release. The pilot attempted to return to the airport, police said, but had to perform a power off controlled landing next to the airport property instead. A preliminary investigation has revealed that the single engine 1970 NAVION H left the airport via runway 32 and then lost power, prompting the pilot to declare an emergency with the tower.

Maryland NRP official resigns after Worcester County DUI charge

The deputy superintendent of the Maryland Natural Resources Police resigned Tuesday after news broke that he was arrested in Worcester County over the weekend on a drunken driving charge. Lt. Col. Ernest Leatherbury Jr., who is an Ocean City resident, was charged with driving under the influence, failure to remain at the scene of a property damage accident, negligent driving and unsafe backing, according to Maryland State Police. A spokesperson for Natural Resources police confirmed the agency was aware of the incident and had placed Leatherbury on emergency suspension pending an internal investigation. A Tuesday afternoon update announced Leatherbury had submitted his formal resignation.

Driver sought in Salisbury hit-and-run that killed 14-year-old boy

Investigators are looking for the driver of a vehicle they believe struck and killed a 14-year-old boy Sunday night and then fled the scene of the Salisbury crash. A Maryland State Police news release shows troopers from the Salisbury Barrack responded around 11:30 p.m. to a home off Outten Road after parents requested help looking for their 14-year-old son who had gone out for a walk and didn t come back. Troopers searching on foot around the 800 block of Parker Road heard a sound that drew them to the nearby bypass. They found the boy lying unconscious on the shoulder of the bypass south of Center Road, according to the release.
