Human-started brush fire extinguished in Paso Robles riverbed
PASO ROBLES, Calif. - Paso Robles and SLO County firefighters responded to a brush fire in the Salinas Riverbed south of Niblick bridge Monday afternoon.
Crews said they received reports of the fire around 1:15 p.m.
The first arriving firefighters reported seeing a column of smoke coming from the middle of the Salinas River corridor.
Thick, overgrown vegetation made it difficult for crews to access the fire. Once firefighters were able to safely gain access, they successfully contained the fire to one-third of an acre.
Two fire engines, one ladder truck and two Battalion Chief from Paso Robles responded. Under the city’s automatic aid agreements, two fire engines, one Air Attack, one Dozer, and one Battalion Chief from Cal Fire / SLO County also responded. Additionally, one fire engine from Templeton Fire was ordered to assist with containing the fire.
The size and complexity of the project will require 300-500 goats per day.

The city’s vegetation management plan identifies grazing as an approved method to reduce hazardous fuels. Hazardous fuel reduction minimizes the risk of a devastating wildfire. The city has chosen grazing to maintain firebreaks because of its effectiveness and low environmental impacts. The size and complexity of the project will require 300-500 goats per day.
The Salinas River corridor occupies approximately 478 acres and stretches more than three miles from north to south, separating the city’s east and west sides. Priorities will be to reestablish primary firebreaks within the Salinas River corridor to aid firefighters during suppression efforts and reduce the continuous spread of fire into the community. –At approximately 9:30 a.m. on April 21, a crew from Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services was dispatched to a vegetation fire on the south of the Niblick Bridge, on the west side, adjacent to the Spring Street offramp.
Fire engines arrived at the scene within approximately three minutes and discovered two separate fires burning within the riverbed. Both fires were located and extinguished to 10×10 spots. The cause of the two fires remains under investigation.

Atascadero Police arrested a 14-year-old on suspicion of carjacking and robbery Saturday afternoon.
According to city officials, police officers responded to the 7400 block of Santa Ysabel Avenue around 12:30 p.m. for reports of a stolen vehicle.
According to victim and witness statements, the suspect had robbed the driver of personal property before brandishing a weapon and stealing the car.
Atascadero paramedics treated two victims for pepper spray exposure.
Officers found the stolen vehicle being driven near Sycamore Rd. and Soledad Ave. where a short pursuit ensued.
The suspect got out of the vehicle and fled on foot towards the Salinas Riverbed, but officers made contact shortly after, according to authorities.
Samantha Parker was arrested for starting the fire and for narcotic violations.
–On Saturday at approximately 9:09 a.m., Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services responded to a report of a vegetation fire in the riverbed adjacent to 3200 Sulphur Springs Road, just north of the Highway 46 East bridge.
First arriving firefighters found a 20’x20′ spot actively burning around trees and brush. Firefighters were able to contain the fire within 10 minutes and worked to fully extinguish the fire over the next hour.
Two fire engines, one paramedic squad, and one battalion chief from Paso Robles responded. Paso Robles Police Department also responded for traffic control and investigation.
