The night before, she brought him a strawberry milkshake in her routine of regularly checking on him. “I’ll be back before you have to pay for your room,” she told him before she left for the night. Her fear gripped her several times over the previous eight months. Before she slipped the key into the blue door, she knocked, as she had always done when she went to check on Jackman at the various motels he had stayed in on and off over the past year.
