Despite a looming eviction deadline for Sakura Gardens Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) seniors, supporters are preparing for a new round of challenges, it was learned during Saturday’s Kansha (Gratitude) Obon.

Mike Dark, staff attorney for the California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform (CANHR), outlined a plan of action to fight the evictions. “Sakura is not a facility, it’s a neighborhood. It’s a community, and a community is always worth fighting for,” he said, pointing out that “although July 20 has been set as the date for closure by Pacifica, that date will not stick because the people here have the power to prevent it.”

The Keiro Intermediate Care Facility became Sakura Gardens ICF when Pacifica acquired the Keiro facilities five years ago.

Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis urged the California Department of Public Health on Wednesday to reject a proposal submitted by Sakura Gardens Intermediate Care Facility to close the facility and move its elderly residents.
The report, titled “Transition Plan,” was submitted on March 29 by Beverly Ito, Sakura Gardens administrator, on behalf of its owners, Pacifica Companies, with a proposed effective date of June 30, 2021. It states that as of March 23, 2021, Sakura Gardens would cease to accept new admissions.
