Athlone School Receives New 4iR STREAM Lab | The Home Of Great South African News

May 2021 The return to in-person learning at Silverlea Primary school in the Western Cape gets an exciting boost with the opening of a 4IR STREAM laboratory thanks to a partnership between Polyoak Packaging Group. The launch is part of an ongoing roll-out of STREAM (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Aeronautics and Mathematics) laboratories that are igniting coding and robotics learning in SA schools. This is the first time a primary school has been outfitted with the fully equipped, 40-person tech laboratory environment that will promote the hands-on development of skills required by our changing world.   While the Department of Basic Education finally announced the pilot of its draft coding and robotics curriculum for Grade 7s in February this year, it is still going to take some time for SA schools and educators to get this vital aspect of 4iR education off the ground for millions of SA children. Athlone pupils get SA’s first 4th Industrial Revolution STREAM lab Share AN ATHLONE primary school has become the first in South Africa to launch a 4th Industrial Revolution (4iR) STREAM laboratory. Silverlea Primary school pupils and teachers will get access to an exciting world of drones, 3D printing, robotics and artificial intelligence. This was made possible through the STREAM education specialist and non-profit organisation, Sakhikamva Foundation. STREAM (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Aeronautics and Mathematics) education focuses on the development of essential skills and knowledge, by enabling children to enjoy hands-on experience with the technologies that are currently re-shaping the world.

After a successful launch last year of the goIT Challenge in South Africa, Tata Consultancy Services and STEAM education specialist, Sakhikamva Foundation have brought together 455 learners from nine high schools to participate in the worldwide school’s technology programme.  Students were tasked with coming up with app ideas to solve real-world problems in their own communities, and six finalist teams had the opportunity to pitch their ideas to the judges on 5 May. The six 2021 SA goIT Challenge finalists were: WO-MEN created by Sinenjongo High School team – an app promoting gender equality and the acceptance of gender diversity which includes a conversation platform to highlight the impacts of gender inequality
