Accountability court acquits four police officers in weapons procurement case - Newspaper

PESHAWAR: An accountability court here on Saturday acquitted four police officers, including the Intelligence Bureau’s director general, on the charge of the embezzlement of funds during the procurement of weapons for the police department in 2009-10. Judge Naveed Ahmad Khan accepted the applications filed by four officers, including former DIG Headquarters Peshawar Dr Mohammad Suleman (now IB DG), former AIG (Establishment) at Central Police Office Kashif Alam (now AIG), former DIG (Telecommunications) Sadiq Kamal Orakzai (now retired) and DIG at the CPO Sajid Ali Khan (now Bannu DIG), under Section 265-K of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Section 265-K empowers the trial court to acquit an accused at any stage of the case if it doesn’t see any probability of the accused being convicted.

District police officer Imran Khan told journalists that an accomplice of the arrested men was also arrested. He said six uniformed men had abducted Noor Khan of Baz Kallay when he was driving a car near Malanag Adda on the Indus Highway on the night of June 27. Mr Khan said the police recovered the car from Bakkakhel area in Bannu, adding the Bannu division police chief Sajid Ali Khan had formed a special team to trace the gang and ensure safe recovery of the abducted man. The DPO said the police obtained the call data record (CDR) of the kidnapped person and used modern technology to reach the gang.

Speaking at a press conference at his office, District Police Officer (DPO) Lakki Marwat Imran Khan, flanked by DSP Headquarters Iqbal Mohmand, said that Noor Khan, son of Mohammad Zaman, resident of Baz Killay, was abducted on June 27 while coming to Lakki Marwat from Peshawar. He said that a first information report (FIR) was registered against unidentified accused at Ghazni Khel Police Station, adding, the man was kidnapped some two months back and the kidnappers had demanded Rs5.5 million as ransom.
