Resumption of war in Western Sahara, no surprise

SPS 28/01/2021 - 11:01 Moscow (Russia) Jan 28, 2021 (SPS) - The resumption of war between Morocco and the Sahrawi Republic is not a surprise considering the failure of the influent international parties to deal with Western Sahara issue and the procrastination of the international community in getting Morocco to come back to the negotiation table, political analyst Sidi Mohamed Benjaafar said. In an interview with Russian radio Sputnik on Monday, Benjaafar said the prevailing tension is not a surprise as the Frente POLISARIO had warned, two years ago, that if Morocco did not return to the negotiation table, all relevant UN agreements would fall apart.

AU Peace and Security Commissioner affirms Western Sahara conflict escalation threatens regional stability

SPS 27/01/2021 - 18:47 Algiers, Jan 27, 2021 (SPS) - The African Union (AU) Commissioner for Peace and Security, Mr. Ismail Chargui, declared on Tuesday that “the conflict between the Sahrawi Republic and Morocco threatens regional stability, calling for the acceleration of the process for the organization of a referendum of self-determination for the Saharawi people ”. In statements to Sputnik, Mr. Chargui said “the escalation between the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and the Kingdom of Morocco may threaten regional stability and that we are seeking a quick solution that will help to put an end to the confrontations and to embady the peace plan into practice by organizing a self-determination referendum”.

Masisi, considered that Morocco must end its illegal occupation of parts of the Saharawi Republic, during his reception of Saharawi Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Mohamed Salem Ould Salek, who is visiting Botswana as Special Envoy of the Saharawi President, H.E. Mr. Brahim Ghali. President Masisi reiterated the principled and steadfast support Botswana has always granted to the Saharawi legitimate struggle for freedom, self-determination and independence, considering that Africa cannot be free unless the Saharawi Republic is totally free.

SPS 19/01/2021 - 17:50 Gaborone (Botswana) Jan 19, 2021 (SPS) - The Ambassador of the Sahrawi Republic in Botswana, Mr. Malainin Lakhal, affirmed that “the renewed war in Western Sahara is open to all possibilities after the violation by Morocco of the truce that has prevailed for thirty years and its attempt to attack Sahrawi civilians in the illegal breach of El Guerguerat ”. Speaking to the Algerian Press Agency (APS) on Monday, the Saharawi diplomat assured that, “with this new aggression, the Moroccan occupier has buried the fragile peace agreement forever and has undermined the three decades of a truce characterized by its intransigence and delay in respecting their commitments”.
