Western Sahara, the resumption of war between Morocco and Saharawi people would be a disaster
“The resumption of a war between Morocco and the Sahrawi People’s Liberation Army would be a disaster: about 100,000 people live in the liberated territories, who would be forced to leave their homes and goods to become refugees in Mauritania or the refugee camps in Tindouf, Algeria.
Tensions are all along the line marked by the Moroccan wall, and several southern families have already moved to the Mauritanian border for their safety, waiting to be transferred to Tindouf.

The recent exchange of quid pro quos between the U.S. and Morocco has been handled well by both sides, despite the ritual carping to be expected from opponents of the quid and the quo. It was the proponent of the deal in general who once announced, “Quid pro quo? That’s just what negotiation is about.”
The U.S. got another endorsement of the “Abraham Accords,” made by a state that already has quiet relations with Israel, but in this case carefully phrased as a future intention, to dampen domestic opposition. (The dampening was not particularly effective, but nonetheless.) Frente Polisario of committing ‘a serious strategic error’ by ending a 30-year ceasefire with Morocco.
Morocco annexed Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, in 1975, sparking a guerrilla war with Polisario, which claims to represent the people of Western Sahara. The war was ended by a UN-brokered ceasefire in 1991.
Morocco still occupies around two-thirds of the territory of Western Sahara and describes it as ‘an integral part’ of its territory.
Both sides have accused each other of breaking the ceasefire. Polisario says Morocco broke the ceasefire when it sent in the army, who then opened fire on civilians, it says, to end a blockade at the border with Mauritania in the Guerguerat region on the night of 12-13 November.
