really changing that much. and is not going to change. we re going to have these sustained winds and heavy rain. what s amazing, by the time we get to the middle of the storm, most won t be able to watch it because they won t have power any more. hopefully they have taken heed and have a battery powered or crank radio to get information. in the middle of the night if you have lantern kit be scary without information on what s going on. i want to let you know that we ve been looking at those pictures of ocean city, maryland. we just got an update on that, that they are now at level three of four stage evacuation plan which means the officers are not patrolling the streets any more there because there s just really so much water. what they are doing is being dispatched on a case by case basis. we got an cup date from the governor of virginia and if you can believe it, in virginia 2 million people are without power in virginia alone. coming up we ll tell you how new

throughout new jersey are expected to flood. record flooding in that area. that s because, chris, this area is already saturated from earlier storms in the months. we ve got many shelters throughout the region that are at or near capacity tonight. as you mentioned more than 1 million people in the last 24 to 48 hours either voluntarily evacuated or fell under those mandatory evacuations that governor christy imposed. they are hunkering down at those shelters tonight or many here in asbury park and elsewhere are taking cover in their own homes or gone to a friend s home or stained hotels. a lot of people in the next 12 hours will be bracing for this storm as it moves up and they sort of had that unique experience, a lot of people didn t know what to expect at first but they ve had all day to watch what irene and the power that she s has brought and the

before you go to the airport because this storm is really wreaking havoc with airlines schedules. now, here truly the most amazing thing i ve seen here at laguardia today despite this incredibly empty afternoon, this afternoon we saw people drive up in cabs and come in to the airport thinking they were going to get on a plane. i don t know what they were thinking because there s nobody here to check them in. there are no planes on the tarmac. all the concourses are closed. those people got back in their cars or back in their cabs. they went back into the city. that s where they belong. new york city officials are saying the best advice is to stay home and stay safe and wait until these airports open again. that s not going to happen before monday. chris? i would like to think that those cabbies didn t know the airports weren t closed and weren t looking for a double fare. let s just talk practically. when you talk about this number

end of the hurricane was actually a little less intimidating than the back end. the back end had a bigger punch. i ll take you over my shoulder up here and you can see that not only is there the wind and the rain but there s the pounding surf that comes with this hurricane. now irene came here during the rising tide. so the pounding waves, some eight to ten feet. slammed into the pier here taking out the far end of the pier. the us fwm smpusgs put some gea measure the wave. but they lost their gear so we won t have an accurate reading. the devastation in this area is not as bad as they expected. yes there s some debris. yes there s some destruction. for instance, the church steeple in town is bent.
