Things Heard & Seen because you d read the Elizabeth Brundage novel it is based on, think again. The film which premiered April 29 sees the relationship between married couple George (James Norton) and Catherine Clare (Amanda Seyfried) begin to unravel after the family moves into an old farmhouse in Upstate New York. Eerie things begin happening at the house as Catherine realizes that George may not be all he says he is. These suspicions eventually result in her murder. Despite knowing who the killer is, the film s ending leaves us with more questions than answers.
Heâs the most malevolent force in what technically qualifies as a haunted house film, an oddly angled inflection on the mini-genre in which the intrusive specters may have plans of their own and death may not be the worst thing in the world. Catherine feels like a hostage in her own home, and though the ominously buzzing night-lights and hallucinations of bloodied mutant fetuses in the kitchen sink drain arenât helping her fragile mental state, theyâre not the real sources of menace in her life. Like a trusted confidante urging her out of a bad relationship, the supernatural elements complement and comment upon the primary plot thread of her curdling marriage, rather than terrorizing for their own sake. She begins the film in thrall of his toxic influence, internalizing his offhanded criticisms and expelling them in the form of bulimia during her first scene. By the conclusion, sheâs achieved a grisly form of freedom.

A new movie coming to Netflix is inspired by a gruesome murder in Upstate New York.
“Things Heard & Seen” stars Oscar-nominated actress Amanda Seyfried as a young artist who discovers her husband and their new Hudson Valley home have sinister secrets after they leave Manhattan for the small town life. The trailer features a bloody ax, mysterious supernatural phenomena, and hints at an affair (or two).
The horror film, also starring James Norton and “Stranger Things” actress Natalia Dyer, is adapted from the novel “All Things Cease to Appear” by Elizabeth Brundage.
