The Cambridge Dictionary defines âknickerbockerâ as âshort, loose pants that fit tightly below the knee, worn especially in the past.â
Jared Jimenez, a fifth grader at East Elementary, wasnât sure what the word meant when she first heard it at last weekâs school district spelling bee.Â
But she knew how to spell it, even with the sneaky silent âkâ at the front.Â
âI donât know. Iâm just so used to the word,â Jared later said.Â
By acing the spelling of that word, plus others like âtestosterone,â âcolonelâ and âdisgorge,â Jared claimed the crown for district-wide spelling bee champion.Â
