Doctor s epic March the Month challenge is complete Date published: 19 April 2021 Dr Ian Brett is pictured at Hartshead Pike A retired radiologist who set out to put his best foot forward for charity has succeeded in raising £1,615 for prostate  cancer. Dr Ian Brett covered 250 miles on his “March the Month” challenge after he originally planned to walk 11,000 poignant steps each day to mark the number of men who die each year from the disease  However, overall, he walked 532,000 steps and covered 250 miles from his Diggle home on his 31-day challenge. And the proceeds of his efforts go directly to Prostate Cancer UK, which aims at raising funds for further research into the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

Garvin Crabtree and Frank Bolger from Oldham Metro Rotary Club and Tony Burke of  Saddleworth Rotary Club have issued a statement on behalf of four Oldham Rotary Clubs in the wake of Oldham Council halving funding to Mahdlo.   Today, largely due to the pandemic, the threat to the emotional wellbeing and mental health of young people remains a real concern and over the coming months is most likely to increase.

Bumper fundraiser for the young Date published: 09 February 2021 Thumbs up community champions (left to right) Tony Burke, Saddleworth Rotary Club, Jane McAvan and Janet Mills, Dovestone WI and Chris Wareing, Mahdlo A kind-hearted community opened their shopping bags and wallets at a special ‘ Shop and Drop’ fund raiser for Oldham’s youth hub Mahdlo. The massive  initiative was organised  by a collective group of community Samaritans from Dovestones WI, Saddleworth Round Table, Saddleworth Rotary Club and Oldham Metro Rotary Club at Saddleworth Rangers ground, Greenfield. Food, toiletries, school items and donations flooded in during the two day event offering support to needy families struggling through the pandemic.

Saddleworth comes together to support Mahdlo Date published: 29 January 2021 The Shop and Drop at Saddleworth Rangers saw donations of food, hygiene supplies, toys and games collected It s been a devastating 10 months for many in Oldham thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, but the Mahdlo Youth Zone and its supporters have remained on the front line, helping the borough’s young people and their families. Saddleworth residents and local businesses rallied together at the end of 2020 to support various Mahdlo initiatives, including the October half term Holiday Hunger campaign, and in December the Shop and Drop at Saddleworth Rangers where donations of food, hygiene supplies and toys and games were collected.

Garvin Crabtree Two generous-spirited Rotary Clubs have received special certificates of  appreciation from the Mayor of Oldham in recognition of their outstanding community support and charity work . The certificates were presented by post to Garvin Crabtree, president of Oldham Metro and Robert Knotts, president of Saddleworth Rotary, by Cllr Ginny Alexander. In her citation to the two clubs, the Mayor said: “I have been overwhelmed by your hard work and dedication during COVID-19 offering your support for local charitable organizations, and in particular organising the shoe donations in support of the homeless. “Your kindness is felt community-wide and is very much appreciated.”
