DHAKA: At least 26 people died after a small launch carrying over 100 passengers capsized after colliding with a cargo vessel in Bangladesh s Shitalakkhya river, according to a media report on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday evening at Narayanganj district, about 16 km southeast of Dhaka.
While five bodies were recovered on Sunday, the Navy, Coast Guard, fire service and police recovered a total of 21 bodies on Monday, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

The death toll from yesterday s launch capsize in the Shitalakkhya river in Narayanganj reached 29 after two more bodies were recovered from the river this evening.
Nahida Barek, upazila nirbahi officer of Narayanganj Sadar upazila, confirmed the matter to reporters after the bodies were handed over to the families at Sayedpur-Koylaghat area tonight. The bodies of five people were recovered till 2am after a passenger launch sank after being hit by a cargo ship yesterday. The bodies of 22 more people were recovered till 5:30pm today. The bodies of two more missing persons were found floating in the river around 7pm, said the UNO.

The death toll from the launch capsize in the Shitalakshya River stood at 29 after the launch was pulled out on Monday.
Most of the bodies retrieved were inside the sunken vessel, said the authorities concerned.
The launch ‘MV Sabit Al Hasan’ sank in the river near the third Shitalakkhya Bridge at Koylaghat of Syedpur in Narayanganj after being hit with a sand carrying bulkhead ‘SKL-3’ on Sunday evening.
Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) said the launch with 47 passengers left the Narayanganj launch terminal for going to Munshiganj at about 5:56 pm. Of the passengers, 20 could be rescued while the rest drowned.
