A group of doctors and nurses gathered to protest Palomar Health’s decision to pursue a controversial new doctor contract for hospital-based physicians and other key medical staff Wednesday.
But, while many passing motorists honked their support, the demonstration, and others like it that have occurred in recent weeks, did not cause Palomar leadership to back down.
Officials confirmed in statements received Wednesday evening that the final moment to commit to working with Emergent Medical Associates and its subsidiary Benchmark Hospitalists & Intensivists has passed. Those who have not signed contracts or signaled their intent to do so will be replaced with new hires.

Citizens group accuses Palomar Health board of Brown Act violation in contract approvals [The San Diego Union-Tribune]
A group of North County residents alleges open meetings violations that, if true, could invalidate the recent approval of controversial doctor contracts that continue to cause friction at Palomar Health.
Late last week, an attorney hired by a group calling itself “Citizens to Save Palomar Health” sent a letter to each of the public health care district’s seven elected directors. They allege a lack of transparency in their approval on June 16 of contracts with Emergent Medical Associates and its subsidiary, Benchmark Hospitalists & Intensivists, for physician staffing of emergency departments and other in-house roles at its two hospitals in Escondido and Poway.

A number of Palomar s staff are concerned about a business decision they said could reduce the number of doctors making rounds at hospitals, reports NBC 7 s Artie Ojeda.
A company called Vituity has provided staffing for Palomar Health for more than 40 years. Beginning in August, Emergent Medical Associates will be the new provider.
Hansen said the change was made for several reasons. She said it’s a best practice to issue a Request for Proposal (RFP) from other providers every few years. That hasn’t been the case at Palomar for a while and said it was time to make it a fair process.
