By Daniel Smith Camille Lecointre & Aloise Retornaz celebrate winning the 2021 470 Women s European Championship © João Costa Ferreira The Men s, Women s and Mixed fleets each sailed their Medal Race on Friday 7 May, the final day of competition At the beginning of the final day, Kevin Peponnet & Jeremie Mion (FRA) led the way in the Men s fleet, with their compatriots Camille Lecointre & Aloise Retornaz topping the Women s fleet. In the Mixed fleet, Nitai Hasson & Saar Tamir (ISR) took a healthy points lead into the final showdown. An exciting Mixed Medal Race started the day off. Nikolaos Brilakis & Rafailina Klonaridou (GRE) won the Medal Race to secure a seventh-placed finish overall, with Daniel Göttlich & Anna Markfort (GER) finishing second for overall fifth.

The 81 teams sailed two races with a southerly 7-9 kt breeze. In the 29 strong Men’s fleet the New Zealanders Paul Snow-Hansen and Daniel Willcox moved to 1st place followed closely by the Spanish crew Jordi Xammar and Nicolas Rodriguez just 2 points behind, with Olympic champions Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan completing the top 3 another 2 points behind Xammar. In the Women’s fleet, the World Champions, Silvia Mas Depares and Patricia Cantero (ESP) are leading the 18 entries, with 11 points with a very consistent day. The French team of Camille Lecointre and Aloise Retornaz dropped one place and are now in a close second, followed by the Brazilians Fernanda Oliveira and Ana Barbachan which had a fantastic day winning both races.

With less then three months to go until the Olympic Games, 81 teams from 25 countries are sailing what is the last 470 major event before Tokyo. Two months after the 2021 470 World Championship, also sailed in Vilamoura, the European Championship has attracted the elite of the 470 Class, including 34 out of the 40 Olympic teams, to sail in Vilamoura. The Women s fleet with 18 teams sailing, saw the reigning European Champions from France, Camille Lecointre and Aloise Retornaz taking two bullets in races 1 and 3, followed by the 2019 World Champions from GBR Hannah Mills and Eilidh Mcintyre, with the 2021 World Champion crew Silvia Mas Depares and Patricia Cantero closing the top 3.
