On the other hand, OnMobile Global Ltd (down 3.65%), Reliance Communications Ltd (down 1.18%), and Vodafone Idea Ltd (down 1.12%) turned lower.
At 09:49 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 744.51 or 1.46% at 50294.8.
The Nifty 50 index was down 197.7 points or 1.31% at 14899.65.
The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was down 41.77 points or 0.21% at 20263.21.

Among the other gainers were Reliance Communications Ltd (up 1.17%), Sterlite Technologies Ltd (up 0.97%), Bharti Airtel Ltd (up 0.87%), and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (up 0.24%). On the other hand, Tata Communications Ltd (down 3.58%), ITI Ltd (down 1.25%), and HFCL Ltd (down 0.66%) moved lower.

Among the other constituents of the index, Sterlite Technologies Ltd decreased 3.12% and Indus Towers Ltd lost 1.77% on the day. The S&P BSE Telecom index went up 17.85 % over last one year compared to the 25.09% surge in benchmark SENSEX.
ITI Ltd has added 1.44% over last one month compared to 0.43% fall in S&P BSE Telecom index and 4.64% rise in the SENSEX.
