AMD s 21 4 1 driver brings a ton of cool new features but Super Resolution is still missing

Apr 20, 2021 10:32 EDT with 3 comments Today, AMD announced its major driver overhaul that was missed last year possibly due to the pandemic situation. The new WHQL driver is coming in the form of the Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.4.1. Despite a lot of new additions and updates, the driver is missing the most anticipated FidelityFX Super Resolution feature. Fidelity FX Super Resolution is a part of AMD s FidelityFX DirectX 12 Ultimate suite and is said to be a framerate boosting technique similar to Nvidia s DLSS where an image will be rendered at a lower resolution and then upscaled to a higher resolution by using AI and ML techniques. However, AMD fans should not despair as there are rumors that FidelityFX Super Resolution will not come with a separate driver and will in fact be implemented in games separately. With that out of the way let s now talk about the loads of features that it does bring.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800U Review

The Ryzen 7 5800U is AMD’s answer to Intel’s Tiger Lake and is their fastest available chip for ultraportable and ultrathin laptops. This is the first Ryzen Mobile 5000 U-series processor to land in our office even though it was announced way back in January, but like many releases this year, it s taken a bit of extra time to actually hit the market. When Intel launched Tiger Lake last year, they were able to reclaim the performance crown in many key workloads for thin and light laptops. While they only had up to four CPU cores compared to eight in AMD’s line-up, Intel was able to deliver class-leading single thread and graphics performance, topping the charts in many lighter applications you might expect to use on this kind of machines.

Credit: Microsoft Microsoft has announced the Surface Laptop 4, offering a potent combination of performance upgrades and battery life improvements in the familiar 13.5-inch and 15-inch clamshell sizes, for prices as low as US$999. Unlike its predecessor, Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 4 now offers choices in both sizes between AMD’s Ryzen 4000 Mobile processors or Intel’s 11th-gen Tiger Lake Core chips. Microsoft promises up to 70 percent more performance versus the Surface Laptop 3.

Why doesn t the Surface Laptop 4 have the latest Ryzen processors?

That’s nothing to sneeze at. The Surface Laptop 3 featured the Ryzen 7 3780U and the Ryzen 5 3850U. Both were quad-core parts. The Ryzen 5 4680U and the Ryzen 7 4980U featured in the Surface Laptop 4 are 6- and 8-core Ryzen processors, respectively. Performance will likely increase sharply just from the added core count. The fact that these are Surface Edition chips is meaningful, too. AMD and Microsoft’s original Surface Edition partnership (the Ryzen 7 3780U and the Ryzen 5 3850U for the Surface Laptop 3) produced semi-custom parts that tweaked the existing Ryzen architecture and added numerous features, from extra compute units and better responsiveness, to an on-die pen controller and more. “When looking for the right processor to power the all new Microsoft Surface Laptop 3, we wanted the best graphics performance in a single processor,” Microsoft distinguished engineer Pavan Davuluri said in a news release at the time.
